Summer Mentors Needed for WV First Star Academy
Dear First 2 Mentors,
The NASA Education Resource Center is seeking your help for our first residential West Virginia First Star Academy! Dedicated to high school youth in foster care, the West Virginia First Star Academy is a year long program with a two week summer experience on Fairmont State’s campus. The goal of the program is to help West Virginia youth in foster care graduate high school, successfully transition out of the foster care system, and potentially pursue post-secondary education. Many of these students would also be first generation college students.
We are hiring mentors to provide support during the summer experience from July 10th-22nd, as well as throughout the school year. Over the summer we would ask that you stay on campus to support the students, for which you would be compensated for your time at $100/day. Please contact Olivia Sokos if you are interested in applying for a summer position at olivia.sokos@fairmontstate.edu.
During the year, we are looking for volunteers to help support students in their academic endeavors through tutoring as well as personal mentorship. These students are largely in need of a steady support system. A few hours of your time each week to support a tutoring session or walk through an application process would be enough to change the trajectory of a student’s life and ambitions. More details will be provided closer to next semester on the nature of the volunteer support during the school year.
We are hoping to maintain the West Virginia First Star Academy for many years to come, so this would be a wonderful opportunity to jump in early and become invested in a truly life changing project!
Sincerely,
NASA Education Resource Center Team
