First2 Student Director Updates
Blue Ridge CTC: Second Planetarium Trip went very well, we had two more students attend this trip than the last trip, and we have planned out five more trips for next semester.
Fairmont State: The impromptu lectures event went well, with a number of students and faculty attending, and Deb Hemler won best lecture by popular vote. Preparations for next semester have begun, and ideas have been proposed for events.
Glenville: We had our ice cream social with impromptu lecture and it was super successful. We had several new students come to this event, and plan to send out emails to try and recruit those students as members, and invite them to participate in club meetings. We also had a meeting to talk about our study marathons that are coming up during exam week and how we are going to go about that!
Marshall: We are catching up on our coaching for our change ideas. We have started a few change ideas, including Donuts with the Deans and Campus Club. Our club got approved for $500 from our SGA to support a team-bonding Spring trip for nonpaid members (and probably towards paid members too), promotional materials, and t-shirts. We have been planning many events on campus and volunteering in a few community outreach (STEM Education) events. We are currently looking into applying for a WVSGC mini grant to support a community STEM event planned by the student directors, looking into planning a summer 2025 research immersion camp, creating videos of research labs on campus, and possibly creating a STEM digital archive that focuses on first-generation folks in WV. Ashlea is trying to give a TEDxMU talk surrounding F2N principles, and Ashlea and Rimsha have submitted a proposal to the 2025 Appalachian Studies Association conference.
University of Charleston: We unfortunately had to change our game plan of doing bingo and push it back to January, due to some issues with student involvement now where finals are close, since we didn’t have anyone come to our scavenger hunt. 🙁 As of right now we just participated in our campus Christmas tree decorating competition. Next, we are participating in getting an angel from the angel tree that our campus is doing where organizations and faculty are each participating in getting one angel.
