Dr. John Stewart

John Stewart received his PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1994 for work in Condensed Matter Theory. Since that time he has directed his efforts toward Physics Education Research (PER). His work attempts both to further knowledge about how physics classes produce understanding and how physics departments and universities can work more effectively to serve and retain all students. He further works to ensure all students can receive excellent high school physics instruction from a highly qualified teacher.  Site leader: WVU Physics Teacher Education Coalition site. PI for the WVU Robert Noyce Scholarship Program and CPHYS Computational Physics Scholarship programs. PI for STEM-R, a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to study STEM retention in the first two years of college. Co-PI of the NSF First2 INCLUDES Alliance grant and part of the research team for that grant.

During my time at WVU, it has been his pleasure to serve the physics community as the Chair of the American Physical Society Forum of Education and as the Chair of the American Association of Physics Teachers Committee on Teacher Preparation. His efforts in departmental transformation, teacher preparation, and physics education research have been recognized by election as a Fellow of both the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers.
