National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship & Goldwater Scholarship: In this session, students will learn about how to create a competitive application for an NSF GRF. This fellowship provides graduate research fellowships for students looking to enroll in doctoral or master’s work at U.S. institutions in STEM fields, as well as social sciences, STEM education and learning, and psychology. Fellows receive an approximately $34,000 stipend for 12 months and a cost-of-attendance allowance ($12,000 cost of education/tuition and fees paid direct to the institution) that is renewable for 3 years. Thus, attending graduate school on an NSF GRF is economically advantageous and opens many doors. In addition, the Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 toward college costs to students who intend to pursue a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Sophomore and junior are eligible to apply. The prestige of being named a Goldwater Scholar is valuable as future capital for awards such as NSF GRF. WVU ASPIRE Office staff assist students with fashioning applications for both NSF GRF and Goldwater.
