  • Biography
I am Professor of Chemistry in the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry (https://www.chemistry.wvu.edu/) at West Virginia University. In addition, I am the Director of the institutional Office of Undergraduate Research (https://undergraduateresearch.wvu.edu/). I attended Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA for my undergraduate degree of ACS certified B.S. in Chemistry. I attended Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA for my Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. Research Interests: I am a chemist with a strong educational teaching and research focus. My research has focused on holistic enhancement and assessment of the chemistry learning experience, including all aspects of the chemistry experience (e.g., lecture, lab & out-of-class homework/review). My current research includes undergraduate research experience - short/long-term effects and academic persistence. I work with graduate students to develop their teaching in a project-based teaching practicum course that addresses current issues and trends in chemistry education.

  • I'm interested in these STEM education questions:
Does early exposure to disciplinary research improve persistence in the major? Is there a demographic effect to any persistence advantage? Can the quality of the research experience be quantified through research hours, research level (discovery, inquiry or creation) & mentoring indicators?

  • What I have to offer the First2 Network:
Familiarity with FR & SO chemistry curriculum. Grant writing/program management of undergraduate research opportunities. Experience as a first-generation college student. Connections to faculty, staff, administrators and students at WVU.

  • What I seek from the First2 Network:
I seek to understand first-generation student academic needs, and models for improved STEM persistence for all students. I seek to share WVU's model for early exposure to research with other stakeholders.
